I grew up in the west of Scotland on Loch Lomond helping my dad crew his freshwater biology research launch. Hence, the outdoors and the wild have always been a passion. From childhood, this has been articulated through painting landscapes in watercolor. My grandmother taught me the basics. An academic career in geography and urban planning, first in the UK and later in the US, meant that I could paint only occasionally. But, in the last 15 years, since retirement, studying at the Carmel Art Education Studio, I have been able to indulge to the full, branching out into oils and pastels. Nostalgia for the barren grace of the highlands of Scotland has drawn me back to paint them several times over the last 20 years. Now living in Indiana, the lack of mountain landscape is more than compensated for by magnificent skyscapes. Viewing directly into sunlight brings out backlit high contrast drama.
